On the road, Seoul

나는 서울에 살지 않는다.
 
그래서 어렸을 적 가지고있었던 서울에 대한 동경으로 작업은 시작된다.
 
사진을 접한 후 처음 카메라를 들고 서울로 향했다. 그때까지만 해도 나는 서울의 관광객이었다. 처음엔 마냥 신기하고 즐겁고 화려했던 서울이 다른 모습으로 비춰졌다. 아무 곳에서 잠을 청하는 노숙인들, 혼자 패스트푸드를 먹으며 바쁘게 통화하는 사람들, 다들 같은 모습을 하고 있는 직장인들, 대낮에 한강에서 유유자적하게 낚시를 하는 사람들, 재개발 지역의 사람들 등등 서울의 모습이 보여졌다.
 
그 후로도 조금씩 변해가고 또 다른 서울의 모습으로 다가왔다.
노량진역에 있던 육교가 사라지고, 한창 재개발하던 지역은 빌딩들이 들어와있고,
서울역에 있던 고가도로는 공원으로 바뀌었고, 사람들은 점점 더 핸드폰에 의지하고, 맑았던 하늘은 점점 더 보기 힘들어지고 있었다. 한편 변하지 않고 항상 같은 자리를 지키고 있는 서울역, 서울역 광장에 가면 항상 있던 노숙인, 한강에선 항상 낚시를 하고 있는 사람들, 서울 어디서든 보이던 남산타워가 항상 그 자리를 지키고 있었다.
 
나는 여전히 서울이라는 대도시의 화려한 것들보다는 이면들이 나의 눈에 들어오고,사진이란 매체는 사람들의 생활을 기록해 왔듯, 어떤 옷을 입었으며 어떤 건물들이 있었는지를 알 수 있듯, 내가 지금 찍고 있는 사진들도 나중에 가면 내 사진을 보는 사람들에게 정보를 전달할 수 있는 서울에 대한 한 시대의 기록으로 남겨졌으면 한다.

On the road, Seoul

I don't live in Seoul.

So the work begins with the yearning for Seoul that I had when I was young.

After seeing the picture, I went to Seoul with the camera for the first time. Until then, I was a tourist in Seoul. At first, Seoul, which was amazing, fun, and colorful, was seen in a different. Homeless people sleeping anywhere, people eating fast food alone and busy talking on the phone, office workers all looking the same, people fishing in the Han River in broad daylight, and people in redevelopment areas were seen in Seoul.

Since then, it has gradually changed and came to another form of Seoul.
The overpass in Noryangjin is gone, and the area that was being redeveloped is filled with buildings.
The overpass at Seoul Station turned into a park, people increasingly relied on cell phones, and the clear sky was getting harder to see. Meanwhile, Seoul Station, which always stays the same, homeless people who always go to Seoul Station Plaza, people who always fish in the Han River, and Namsan Tower, which was seen everywhere in Seoul, were always there.

I still hope that the pictures I'm taking now will be left with an era of information about Seoul that can pass on to people who see me later, just as the facade of Seoul still comes into my eye and the media of photography has recorded people's lives.
